Common Cold vs. Seasonal Flu: Symptoms, Prevention, and Treatment

As the weather breaks, we become increasingly susceptible to colds and flu. In as much as colds and flu do sound alike in their manifestations, they are nonetheless two different conditions altogether; different, if not in symptoms, then in their severity and treatment. Understanding these differences is important if we are to manage and prevent them with the least possible interference to our activities.

Symptoms

Common Cold:
The common cold usually develops gradually. Its symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, mild cough, sneezing, watery eyes, and mild fatigue. Colds generally last a few days to a week and are not as severe as the flu.

Seasonal Flu:
Symptoms of flu are usually more severe and sudden. High fever, chills, body aches, severe fatigue, headaches, and a dry cough are characteristics of the flu. Some people may even feel nausea or vomiting, especially children. Unless treated, the flu may linger for as long as 1-2 weeks and possibly result in more serious complications, such as pneumonia.

Prevention

- The following tips can be followed to keep cold and flu at bay:
- Wash your hands frequently using soap and water.
- Avoid touching your face, especially around the nose, mouth, and eyes.
- Follow good hygiene practices; disinfect commonly touched items or surfaces.
- It provides immunity with good nutrition, proper water intake, and regular physical activities.
- To prevent the flu: Get vaccinated each year to lower your risk.

Treatment

For the Common Cold:

- Rest and drink plenty of fluids.
- Over-the-counter medications can help with symptom management, such as decongestants and pain relievers.
- Natural remedies can be used to soothe a sore throat, such as steam inhalation or drinking honey in tea.

For the Flu:

Rest is highly essential, and keeping one's self dehydrated will facilitate one's recovery processes. Antiviral medications can decrease the duration of the flu if taken early.
Over-the-counter medications may avoid symptoms, but if the symptoms worsen, consult the doctor.

Although the common cold and seasonal flu tend to occur at the same time of the year, knowing some of their differences will better prepare you for proper treatment and prevention. While the common cold is usually mild, the flu can be much worse and may even cause complications. Take precaution through good hygienic practice, boosting your immune system, and taking the yearly vaccination to keep your body healthy.
